Yufu Shohaku

Description

Son of Yufu Chikuryū, Yufu Shōhaku (born in 1941 in Beppu) represents the second generation of a family of bamboo artists. His father, who trained under Satō Chikuyūsai—the master of Shōno Shōunsai, the first Living National Treasure in bamboo art—introduced him to the fundamentals of the craft from primary school onward. At a very young age, he created his first bamboo works intended for ikebana.

As an independent artist, Yufu Shōhaku has built a reputation for his distinctive style, combining plant roots and fragments of giant bamboo with traditional weaving techniques. President of the Professional Association of Bamboo Artists, he is also the recipient of numerous awards recognizing both his creativity and his role in preserving and transmitting this art.
